How to Help Seniors Age Safely at Home

We all want our aging loved ones to feel safe wherever they may be. It’s especially important to ensure that their safety is guaranteed in their own home. Whether you are taking care of them at your house or allowing them to live on their own, it’s essential to find ways to make the house more comfortable for them.

Having your elders age gracefully at home will require some spending. But will it matter when it’s for their safety and your peace of mind, too? Allowing them to enjoy ease of mobility and helping them keep their mind and body healthy in old age is worth it.

There are a handful of ways to help your aging family members age gracefully and safely. From arranging things to adding modifications, there are some things you can do to improve their quality of life in their twilight years.

Create more space

It will do your elders good if you give them as much room as possible around the house. Clearing pathways and giving them more areas to walk in will lessen fall hazards and other possible injuries. Allowing them to move around without much risk of bumping into anything will help them perform tasks easily. If you find that you have unnecessary furniture, give them away or sell them.

Any tripping hazards like rugs, cords, and pet beds are best removed as well. In addition, add more lighting to make all spaces more visible for them to see. These changes will help you make their living environment safe, since fall hazards are major concerns for seniors. Moving around without much need for assistance will improve their mobility, too.

Keep necessities within reach

In the same way that you’re giving your elderly loved ones more floor area to keep them safe, it’s best to move things that they frequently use within easy reach for them. For example, cooking ingredients must be kept on lower shelves or racks that wouldn’t require them to reach up high or climb up to get. Their medication and other maintenance needs must always be kept in a place that they can easily get to without exerting much effort upon reaching the room.

Ask them about the things they regularly use in the kitchen, pantry, closet, and medicine cabinet. Arrange these usual items in such a way that they will not strain themselves to get them. If you have to replace some furnishings in order to have more ergonomic storage spaces in place, do it. This way, they will feel that they are independent enough to attend to their own needs, but at the same time, you are able to make it easier for them.

Make sure they socialize

Not a lot of family members realize it, but it’s important for senior adults to not feel too lonely. If they spend too much time cooped up at home without seeing friends or neighbors, they will feel isolated. This can pose a health risk due to declined mobility, and can even shorten their life. It might surprise you how much loneliness can take its toll on an elderly person’s well-being.

If you are able to, see to it that they get to go out and mingle with other senior adults. Look for programs in your community that will allow them to engage socially. It’s best to go for the ones that offer transportation options for senior adults as well. If you can, search online for other local activities that they can join. It’s important to make sure that they feel part of the community to encourage them to live fully.

Make advanced home modifications

The most costly change you can make to ensure that your elderly loved ones have a comfortable life is to start installing modifications around the house. You can start by adding grab bars in bedrooms, bathrooms, or hallways. This can help prevent a lot of falls. Other more expensive modifications that you can consider are ones that allow them to be more independent, like widening doorways or installing wheelchair ramps.

If you are looking to know more about home modifications like stair lifts, lift chairs, walk-in tubs, and ramps, we at Western Stairlifts would be more than happy to assist you. Talk to us and get a free evaluation today!
